Video Drop 12

‘Jim Screechie’ by Spice [Directed by Kirk Lee]

First up this week is one of my favourite new-ish like type videos and probably one for what is my favourite Dancehall tune of 2010 thus far. The always interesting Spice is back with a video for her outstandingly colourful Equinox produced tune, ‘Jim Screechie’. This song is simply about Spice . . . Not being the most faithful of women to her man and that is exactly what you see in the video. First thing - Yes, Spice looks absolutely ridiculous at times here - There’s the sunglasses with (apparently slightly used) cigarettes, there’s the cans for rollers in her head and there’s the very strange neck piercing (which I’d actually seen her have before, I believe) amongst other things (and the chocolate . . . Yeah Spice. Yep). Besides all of that, there’s also this guy who goes through some very heavy shit to get to Spice only to have Mr. Spice return home prematurely. All in all, it is a great time had and you couldn’t have expected more.

‘Chaque Jour’ by Goldee [Directed by Amic Bedel]

And what would a video drop be without a Zouk song? This week we have a multi-dimensionally interesting piece as Achis Reggae favourite, Goldee, returns with the latest single from her 2009 album, ”Le Moi De May”, ‘Chaque Jour’. I LOOOOOOOOOVE this song. It was definitely one of the highlights from that album and now that it reaches video (excellent choice, by the way) it is done most excellently. Apparently it was shot during Goldee’s visit (was Goldee touring Japan? Does Zouk mash up Japan like that?) to the Far East. The video has a unique way of being shot where it very closely follows (bonafide CUTIE) Goldee throughout her day. We see her get up, get naked, shower, get dressed and head out for her day. Goldee . . . doesn’t really do much of anything in particular, but . . . Hell it’s entertaining watching her not really do anything in particular. She eventually catches the eye of a young Japanese man and the new couple . . . Well they don’t really do anything either, but really after just hanging out with Goldee, watching her strip, do her makeup and chill on the train, do you really care??? Me neither.

{Note: Wayyyyyyy more important than this wonderful video is the fact that Goldee apparently knows who I am! Biggup Bredz who discovered my name mentioned a little on Goldee’s Facebook, by Goldee herself. So biggup Goldee, biggup Bredz and biggup Achis! Oh. And if I also put her name on the tags to this post, that‘s why}

‘Miss Right’ featuring Sizzla Kalonji by Peter Jackson [Directed by Chris Stacey Productions]

Have I mentioned that I’m not the biggest fan of Hip-Hop? Okay, but if you were going to try to do something to get my attention with a Hip-hop song, you know what you could do? First of all you could enlist the help of a few of the SWEETEST pieces of eye candy you can find and then you could also tap my favourite artist of all time, Sizzla Kalonji. Well, that is exactly what Canadian rapper, Peter Jackson (not to be confused with the great Caribbean boxer of the same name, of course. He’s been deceased for 109 years) (but biggup Peter Jackson anyway) has done with his new song (I THINK it’s new), ‘Miss Right’. I don’t like this song, but apparently it’s been getting a nice bit of reaction and I’m going to leave it right there. Reggae fans - It’s Sizzla and (beautiful) ass. Enjoy!

‘Wine Up’ by Cali P [Directed by Addictive Image & Brainfood Films]

Speaking of ass - I first actually saw that another Achis Reggae favourite, Cali P, had a new video a few weeks back and when I finally did check it, I have to admit that I was somewhat surprised at what I was seeing, The video is for ‘Wine Up’, Cali P’s cut of Hemp Higher’s Burn Up Riddim and it’s essentially a harmlessly electric dance tune. The highlight here is also fairly cut and dry - Most of those girls are very easy on the ocular region and seeing them ‘wine up’ definitely wasn’t much of a nuisance AT ALL for me. Still, I do feel inclined to comment on Cali P, himself, as I’m sure I’m not the only one who comes away thinking that the WICKED turban clad singer looks at least somewhat out of place. Still, it does look like everyone had a good time and, yeah I think I may be starting to like this tune actually.

‘Our Heroes’ by Ed Robinson [Directed by Salvatore Fullmore]

Lastly, I hadn’t actually noticed that veteran crooner Ed Robinson was up and working again on new material until I saw this excellent video for his SWEET new tune, ‘Our Heroes’. Robinson is an artist who, although he certainly doesn’t receive the publicity and notoriety that he deserves, he maintains a nice level of activity and, more importantly, a nice lot of devoted fans as well. Those people are DEFINITELY going to eat up this look back to yesteryear courtesy of Robinson, who completely avoids being corny and cliché on the tune. For added emphasis, the video finds Ed Robinson mining the VAULT of all Reggae Vaults at VP Records and their store in New York as well. This tune is absolutely brilliant and the video at least seems to accept the terms of the song and makes an attempt to follow suit (and you know it’s new because you see Gyptian’s ”Hold You” on the shelf near the end) (yep, I’m a nerd) and it carries it out so nicely in my opinion.
