Check It #67: The Clean Up

"Searching" by Luciano [Diamond Rush Productions]

Jumping first this week is certainly a big deal as the legendary Luciano returns with a brand new album via the wonderful people at Diamond Rush Productions (biggup The Volcano Trumpet), "Searching", which reached back in August. Luciano is interesting because, even when not at his best, he's established a certain level of quality which he seems incapable of dipping beneath and while “Searching” may not be his finest work to date (it isn't), it is a very solid album in my opinion featuring big tracks such as, most notably, the title song and the delightful 'Jah So Sweet' and several others. Luciano and DRP also took care to make some nice moments to shine on the surface and "Searching" features combinations with stars Capleton, Lady Saw and Marcia Griffiths. Still, the finest guest is made by Emperor Manjusha who turns up 'Haile Jah' in a major way.

"Champion Sound" [Muti Music]

Former Luciano stablemate, Sizzla Kalonji, once again stars on a project coming from Mista Savona and Muti Music from out of Australia as somewhat of an accompanying piece to the album label and artist set earlier this year, "Born A King". Prior to the album Muti Music did similar releases for singles which had multi mixes of the tune and they've (nicely) saw no reason to discontinue the practice as "Champion Sound" is in now. Featured here are no less than ELEVEN mixes of the title track -- two of which feature Turbulence (another Xterminator product) and Errol Dunkley which you should be well familiar with -- and filling up the ranks are other songs on the riddim from the Burro Banton, Iyashanti and a stirring combination featuring the great Johnny Clarke and veteran chanter, Determine (who has been, quietly, on a very strong stretch recently), as well as a clean version of the riddim here, the Soundclash from Savona. A very interesting and clever idea in my opinion and one which I'm glad that they've continued in building.

The Sweet Sativa Riddim [Family Music]

DEFINITELY check out the latest effort from Family Music and the Next Generation Family from out of Germany, the SWEET, Sweet Sativa Riddim. This track is nearly divine and came in as candy to my ears and fortunately the NGF and Family Music didn't just enlist the talents of anyone to handle the vocals. Instead, they've placed their gem of a composition in the hands of very talented names such as Raymond Wright, Uwe Banton, of course Fyah T (biggup Fyah T), Suga Roy & Conrad Crystal, the Vanguard Leader, Fitta Warri and others. Still, the song I was most looking forward to hear came courtesy of Achis Reggae favourite, Montserrat fire-breather Jah Marnyah who absolutely dazzles with his effort here, 'Stress Free' and I should also mention Al Pancho who turns in a big tune as well. And more credit goes to the labels here for including a dubbed out version of this giant lovely riddim which you should go and pick up - like right now.

"Rebirth" by Nadia Batson [Dynamic Entertainment]

Although the shelves haven't been exactly brimming with albums from Soca stars in 2014, it has been a good year still. Certainly a lot of that had to do with the fact that Bunji Garlin dropped one of the genre's most anticipated albums in… ever, "Differentology". But we've also seen sets come via Destra, Farmer Nappy, Kes and Machel Montano who makes an album or two every year and I'm probably forgetting someone else. Maybe "someone else" like the always active Nadia Batson who did her part with an album which may lay a significant claim to being THE best Soca album of 2014, "Rebirth". Batson is someone who, at this point (and for a few years now), has been one of the genre's most all-around talented figures and it is put on a full and vibrant display on "Rebirth" for which an argument can be made as being her BEST album to date (although "Caribbean Girl" still gets my vote). This album features BIG tunes of all varieties such as the monstrous 'Bad Influence', 'Rated R', 'Di Most Unruly' alongside Lavaman, 'Prisoner' and others. However, with that being said, the album's coolest feature definitely comes at its tail when Batson amazes with a song I don't recall hearing at any point, the lyrically sensational 'More Nadie', which is not to be missed.

Digital
"Higher Level" [Fox Fuse]

Biggup Ssignal Productions who, through the downright inescapable amazing people at Fox Fuse, deliver this very interesting compilation, "Higher Level", which shines the spotlight on some of the up and coming Reggae talents from out of Guyana. The project is a riddim album (presumably for the Higher Level Riddim), which actually features almost completely 100% female vocalists who you're unlikely to have heard of, but following their efforts here, you're unlikely to forget. In my opinion, you should pay a special amount of attention to Charmaine Blackman (who has a very interesting voice), Natoya London and Amanda Peters, but nearly all of the songs on this track are at least decent. Check it out for yourself - a very nice Lover's Rock collection.

Digital
"Big City Vibration" by Lymie Murray [BCR Productions]

Sweet singing veteran Lymie Murray is back with a brand new album from BCR Productions, "Big City Vibrations". I've yet to hear this album but I've been listening through the clips for awhile now and it sounds fairly impressive, which you should expect in considering the source. Murray is someone who definitely is well-respected in certain crowds so, although I hesitate to call him underrated, I suspect that this album could do a lot of good work for him should the masses get to hear it. "Big City Vibrations" (delivered by VPAL) features Beenie Man and Mikey General and I have a VERY good feeling about this one. Beat me to it and pick it up today.

CD [I THINK] + Digital
The Citi Roc Riddim [Platinum Camp/Digital One Enterprise]

Quickly, although I'm not really that fond of the Citi Roc Riddim as an album - it has one or two songs which I really enjoy and is, otherwise, surrounding by average and below average work - I do definitely like the wildly infectious actual track (and its album cover) from Platinum Camp, Digital One Enterprise and Icon Music Group, which shine in several variations throughout here making IT the real star on its album. Aside from that, give me 'Shorty' by Bramma, Kalado's 'Life' and maybe 'Never Scared' by TOK and… you can keep the rest of these.

Digital
'Who's Hurting Now?' by Tanya Mullings [Rymshot Productions]

We don't hear nearly as much from either Dean Pond and his Rymshot Productions or esteemed Canadian songstress Tanya Mullings that we'd like to and, in one shot, we get them both together again as the two team up for Mullings' new single ‘Who's Hurting Now?'. Hopefully (and expectedly) this strong tune leads to some type of full project which would be very well anticipated.

Digital
'Ruff Life' by Agent Sasco [Randy Rich Productions]

To my opinion, still the Dancehall's most talented star, Agent Sasco, is back again with a dominant single from Randy Rich Productions, 'Ruff Life'. Were I not so damn tired of waiting for it, I'd still be calling from a new album from the DJ (it's been… maybe eight years now???) and songs like this are the biggest reason why. 'Ruff Life' is easily one of the biggest Dancehall tracks that I've heard in 2014 and Sasco persists in his brilliant run which goes back around half a decade now.

Digital
"Ganja Farmer" by Aidonia [Tiger Shark Records]

And lastly, biggup Aidonia who teams up Tiger Shark Records to go Marlon Asher on the masses (not really) with 'Ganja Farmer'. This is a song which doesn't go into the kind of ultra-aggressive and entirely unrelenting (and unrelentable) Dancehall for which Aidonia is most known (and for good reason, when he's at his best or anywhere near it, he is one of the greatest to ever do it, already) and I love to see the ultra-talented step outside of their 'comfort zone', which he does here in a fine way. The full release carries all kinds of mixes of the very well displayed track in a delightfully old-school fashion.

Check It #66: In The Beginning

'Rock Stone' featuring Capleton & Sizzla Kalonji by Stephen Marley [Ghetto Youths International]

First up today is a song which we never actually mentioned until now but, clearly, has generated a lot of unsurprising attention over the past few months as Reggae royalty, Stephen Marley, links with both Capleton and Sizzla Kalonji on a big tune, 'Rock Stone'. Anytime anyone named Marley releases… anything the talk immediately turns to a next album and while I don't think that Stephen's next set (and the Grammy he will surely win for it) is right around the corner, 'Rock Stone' was outstanding and you didn't really have to listen to it to know that it would be. Any combination of these three big names would lead to something nearly special, at worst, and this song was not the exception. It took a surprisingly long time, but the tune finally reached official release, somewhat coinciding with the official clip (which Bredz surely has been kind enough to put up there) (biggup Bredz).

Digital
'Real Link' by Junior X [Bonner Cornerstone Music]

"Di wickedest fight mi face a from family
Dem bad mind mi fi nuthin but vanity
Fi maintain mi freedom and sanity:
NO DISRESPECT BUT MI NO TRUST NOBODY
That's why mi bun hypocrite from dem head to dem foot
Come in as yuh friend but a help dem ah look
FROM NOW ON, MI AH LIVE BY DI BOOK
MI NUH TRUST NO FACE, NO MATTA HOW IT LOOK!"

A big, big credit goes to veteran chanter Junior X for continuing to destroy and rebuild the modern social commentary in his typically subtly brilliant way with his latest track coming from the Bonner bros and company at Bonner Cornerstone Music, 'Real Link'. It's been awhile from the last time we covered a tune from Junior X, I think, and this song was definitely a strong return as in it, X not only tells all to be careful of who you spend your time with ["Mind who you lime round, spend time round. They could be the same ones pulling you down"] [biggup Ickarus] but to be thankful as you possibly can for all of the good people in your life. A giant song and one of the finest compositions I've heard recently.
Digital
'For Your Love' by Jamelody [J'Island Records]

Sweet singing Jamelody from out of Trinidad is in next with an offering that takes a full advantage of his amazing vocals, the downright Jah Cure-esque ‘For Your Love' from J'Island Records. Jamelody is someone who started out with so much attention and fanfare and, these days, he's kind of settled in to a nice spot and in 2014 he's managed to turn out some very good music but I think that it all kind of pales in comparison for him (even over the last two or three years or so) when it comes to 'For Your Love'. To my opinion, this is the best he's sounded in a long time and I'm sure you'll agree that he's in a fine form when you pick up Jamelody's 'For Your Love' today.

Digital
Hungry Lion Records

Hungry Lion Records is doing big things this week (fully) with releasing a handful of singles across their more than tough Tough Times Riddim. The vocalists featured offer a nice mixture of up and comers with big names with the likes of IGlori (a fantastic name), Lucky Jobe and Victorious Vibrations (another great name) on one end, while heavy-hitters Anthony B, Determine and Louie Culture handle also stepping forth. To my opinion it is definitely the oft-overlooked and underrated Determine who provides the Tough Times with its biggest set as the chanter mines gold on 'When Will It End'.

"Dem system mash up, government ah play catch-up
A whole heap a innocent youths inna di jailhouse lockup"

Digital
The New Money Riddim [Fresh Ear Productions]

Though probably not one of my favourites in terms of the songs on it, I've always been a fan of the work of ["She want a man with whole heap of fame like - "] Arif Cooper and his Fresh Ear Productions imprint and his latest composition, the infectious New Money Riddim, certainly has my attention. This one is kind of Groovy Soca-ish to my ears and it, as a piece of music and an instrumental, is candy for your ears. That being said, however, out of the ten or so original tracks on the riddim… I don't really like any of them. Surprisingly, it is Major Brandish who probably scores the highest with 'Niceness', a decent track, and he takes top honours away from Kartel, Tifa, Demarco, Alkaline and others.

Digital
'Gal Tek Weh Yo Gal' by Kiprich [Black Spyda Records]

Warmonster, Kippo, goes Cocoa Tea on the people (not really) with a very modern spin with one of his latest tunes, 'Gal Tek Weh Yo Gal'. It's so interesting to me that, over the course of the last few years or so, Kiprich has turned into a soldier. He's always ready for war and that is what he has become most well known for lately. But he's always been a very inventive lyricist and a song like this is a sterling example of what the colourful deejay is capable of.

Digital
"North Wind Remixes" [Jamrock Vybz Records]

Jamrock Vybz Records (of course I initially typed that as "Jamrock Vybz Kartel") is serving up an expanded version of their North Wind Riddim from just last year. That original released packed just four tracks together with an instrumental. This version??? Via the various remixes of songs from Lutan Fyah, Sizzla Kalonji, Italo Skarcha and Alexander Star, it's been stretched out to TWELVE. Have fun!

Digital
'Genesis' by Jah Jah Mali [Stand Up Muzic]

I don't actually know if I have heard the name Jah Jah Mali before… okay I have heard it before in a different version. Of course there's Jamaican veteran vocalist, Jahmali [new album, "We I Open", in stores now], but this artist comes from out of St. Croix and is attracting quite a bit of attention with his new single, 'Genesis', alongside Stand Up Muzic. The song is a praising piece which, though I've had to work on it some, is a really nice release. JJM has a very interesting delivery. If you can imagine a less refined version of VI standout, Army, that'd probably be the best way to describe it and he makes what should be a fine introduction with, I believe, his first song which is this widely available.

Digital
"Stand The Test" by Midnite [Iaahden Sounds]

Unsurprisingly, we got a lot of feedback from readers in regards to the new album from Midnite and Iaahden Sounds, "Stand The Test" (we still hear from Midnite fans who absolutely LOVE everything 'they' do and will make the case that something is a classic while simultaneously admitting that they've yet to actually hear a particular album [WHAT!]). That album is currently available on both digital and physical platforms. You can find the digital… anywhere. And the CD can be found in the usual places like CDBABY and Ernie B. There you go.

COMING SOON
'Love Language' by Excellent [JahLight Records]

And finally today (biggup easily written posts, I love them) is yet another release from our friends at JahLight Records from out of Trinidad. The last time we heard from them (which was… about forty seconds ago) they were delivering a very strong EP from Kwesi Fontinelle by the name of "Reconciliation" [in stores now, go and get it] and this time they're bringing us a new big name. The phrase 'Trini female Reggae singer' is one which will always come with a whole heap of potential passion for me because, possibly, it alludes to the walking divinity that is Queen Omega but the single most talented woman in the genre today now has some company. Meet Excellent (we want Excellent to start doing big things, if for no other reason than because she simply has to make a combination with Perfect Giddimani) (Excellent & Perfect in a combination!) [WHAT!]. The singer makes his introduction to Reggae music with what I believe is her very first song EVER 'Love Language'. First of all, check the riddim on this song - it is BIG and if they have not already, hopefully JLR turns it over to a few other vocalists (and maybe one of them could be Queen Omega!). For her part, Excellent also brings a fine form with a very powerful and soulful voice. She also seems to have a nice edge to her. She's confident but humble and it well comes through on the song.

"No need for us to speak
Your smile is all it's gonna take to knock me off my feet
This feeling is so deep
Sometimes I get so weak"

A fine performance and we're definitely looking forward to getting to know more about Excellent and, certainly, hear more new music from her and definitely biggup JahLight Records (who also includes an 'excellent' dubbed out version of 'Love Language') who continue to tap excellent up and coming Trini Reggae and Gospel talents.

Check It #65: The Transformer

'Transformer' by Tabia [Fox Fuse]

While it definitely took a little while, I do have to say that, eventually, St. Vincy Soca star, Tabia, won me over with her big tune from this season, the damn infectious 'Transformer'. The tune's official digital release comes courtesy of Fox Fuse (as does everything else these days) and is produced by Stadic Studios, who performs a master class here. I've paid attention to Tabia over the years, probably not enough admittedly, but I've never heard her sound as fantastic as she does on one of the coolest tunes of the season.

Digital
'Flying High' by Turbulence [Nicko Rebel Music]

I don't know the last time we covered a tune from Nicko Rebel Music, but they're back with a new single from veteran, Turbulence. These days, I go into pretty much every tune from Turbulence wondering if it is one which finds him in a better form or not. You don't even have to question the quality if he is, it's going  to be a good song. 'Flying High'? Is a good song. Certainly what helps this one is the LOVELY riddim underpinning the track which NRM is nice enough to include a version of (and hopefully they'll allow someone else to voice it if they haven't already) on the official digital release.

Digital
"Fuck You" by Alkaline [Tad's Records]

The always and wholly interesting Alkaline and his eyeballs is back with his… second or third EP release from Tad's Records in 2014, alone, and he wants you to know that he's not very fond of you (what he actually wants you to know is that he really likes you) with "Fuck You". I have heard songs from Alkaline that I have enjoyed -- I have heard talent -- but I'm probably just too damn old to like his music. As for this five track set (ten altogether with clean and explicit versions of all five) which is compiled on pieces from earlier this year and in 2013, the only tune I kind of like is the ridiculous and angry 'Ready', but Alkaline has thousands of fans greater than I. Maybe you're one of them, if so, check out his new EP.

Digital
The World Riddim [PG Records]

Two tracks from Sizzla Kalonji lead the way on the World Riddim from PG Records. While his second effort, 'Red Light', isn't very good at all, his first, 'Rebel Soldier', is nearly exceptional and makes a perfect usage of the hype World Riddim. Also doing well is I-Octane, with 'Gal Ting'. Black Ryno also shows up to this party as do Nik Nak and others.

Digital
'Diamond Touch' & 'Make You Feel' by Stein [Fox Fuse]

Reigning and defending world's angriest man, Stein, is up next with a pair of releases from… Fox Fuse, of course. 'Diamond Touch’ and 'Make You Feel'. I do prefer the outlandishly antisocial version of the DJ (so much do I prefer that version that I almost never listen to any of his other songs), but on both of these tunes the lyrical hand grenade keeps his temper checked and goes in a totally different direction. Stein is interesting because he seems to have progressed over the last year or two and is now capable of not only doing things that he couldn't do before (or wouldn't try before), but succeeding with them as well. This time? Pick up both 'Diamond Touch' and 'Make You Feel' and hear for yourself.

Digital
The Angel Riddim [J'Island Records]

As far as I know, the Angel Riddim is a track which originated from last year via J'Island Records who now, with the help of VPAL, bring it to official digital release. I didn't know that ALL of these songs were on this riddim but I had heard one or two of them and now, seeing the full tracklist, once again, the people at J'Island Records have done very well. The biggest moment here, 'Jah Will Be There', comes from Jamelody and Achis Reggae favourite, Cali P, but standouts also include Iba Mahr, Nikiesha Barnes (there is no way I spelled her name correctly, ABSOLUTELY none!), Salisha and the downright delightful Nikki Burt with the soulful 'Staying Right Here'.

Digital
The 7ven Riddim [UIM Records]

UIM Records' latest composition, the 7ven Riddim is up next and though I'm definitely not in love with this track, it features at least one lasting moment. The actual riddim is one which has its core in a place which is part R&B which, obviously, makes it perfect for someone like Alaine who UIM was sagacious enough to tap and who, also, completely DESTROYS the 7ven Riddim with her towering 'Better Than This'. Dre Island, Bugle and Chris Martin also turn in nice efforts over what is left of the 7ven Riddim (as does Rr with 'Crazy In Love'. And certainly you can't have new music from UIM which is sans Tommy Lee and Sparta does make an appearance with the unsurprisingly somewhat 'Nympho'.

Digital
The Full Throttle Riddim [Studio Vibes Entertainment]

And we also have at least the second riddim I know called the Full Throttle (albeit the first one, I THINK, was a Soca track), this one coming from Studio Vibes Entertainment. While this isn't the best track I've ever heard and it isn't even close and it doesn't make for the best album either, there're some impressive tracks on this Full Throttle. They come from the likes of Chan Dizzy (I don't know if I've ever said that) (biggup Chan Dizzy), Ele and Deablo. The actual riddim has its moments as well and, thankfully, SVE was nice enough to include a clean version of it as well.

Coming Soon
"Ghetto Born" by Jah Vinci [Grillaras Productions]

Following the likes of Addis Pablo (more on him in a minute), Bugle, Popcaan and others, 2014 is turning out to be a strong year for debut albums and the latest to set his sights on that first project is Jah Vinci who is set to bring forth "Ghetto Born" and he's doing so with the formidable Grillaras Productions. I've never really been the biggest fan of Jah Vinci's (like Popcaan and Black Ryno and others) he seemed come up with Kartel at a time when Kartel wasn’t amongst my main focuses but he has well shown a significant talent and one which, I believe, may translate well onto an album. For their part, Grillaras have also shown a penchant for turning out top albums. Most recently there was Lutan Fyah's "Life Of A King" from just last year, but they've also worked full projects from Natural Black [new album, "No Prejudice", in stores now] and UT Ras (hopefully they do that again someday). Having turned their attention now to Jah Vinci, Grillaras appears to have seized the moment and enlisted the help of both Beenie Man (once again) and Junior Reid. Still, having gone through the clips, the song I'm most interested in hearing fully is definitely 'Jah Throne'. I have a pretty good feeling about this one and am well looking forward to this album.

The Imperial Crown Riddim [Maximum Sound]

Lastly this week, Frenchie and friends at Maximum Sound continue their recent burst of activity with the GORGEOUS Imperial Crown Riddim which is set to reach at the end of this month on the digital side. I'd heard a song on this riddim which absolutely mesmerized my senses and it came from Chezidek, 'Bless My Life'. It may just be one of the better recent selections from the singer (which is saying something considerable because Chezidek has been flaming lately) and, fortunately, he isn't alone. Also making efforts on the Imperial Crown Riddim are Luciano, Jesse Royal, Exco Levi, Dre Island as well as the aforementioned Addis Pablo. Maximum Sound also does include the instrumental for the track, which caps off a what appears to be yet another STERLING release from the label.

Check It #64: Because. I'm. Happy.

"Happiest Man Alive" by Machel Montano [Mad Bull Music]
Taking the lead this week is Soca supernova, Machel Montano, who is up with his album for 2014, "Happiest Man Alive". Though I wasn't in love with Montano's output this year, once again he went home with the hardware, netting his fourth consecutive Power Soca Monarch crown as well as his eight-hundredth Road March title. As it always does, his album includes his big tunes from that particular year, this year centering around pieces such as the title track, 'Epic' and, of course, 'Ministry Of Road'. "HMA" also includes a song which I had forgotten about and is probably my favourite on this album, 'The Power'. Legendary R&B group, Boyz II Men and Timaya guest on another Soca album in a year which is progressing slowly, but nicely there (Skinny Fabulous could certainly add to the numbers but I know that's just too much to ask for).

CD [I THINK] + Digital
"Where We Come From" by Popcaan [Mixpak Records]

I've never been the biggest fan of Popcaan's but if ever there were a moment to give the man his credit and respect it would certainly be now. His brand new debut album, "Where We Come From" has been one of the most discussed albums in Dancehall in recent times and it's also been quite well received thus far. The album comes via the same Mixpak Records imprint which did one Vybz Kartel's most recent releases, "Kingston Story" and, as I said, has been gaining a whole heap of attention. To my opinion, "Where We Come From" actually comes off as a little bit of a more accessible sound. You hear a variety of different textures, including Hip-Hop, which has found a very impressive fan base thus far. So biggup Popcaan for his success and definitely be sure to check out the new album.

"Dernier Appeal" by Tiken Jah Fakoly [Barclay]

Afrikan Reggae superstar, Tiken Jah Fakoly is back with his first new album since… his last new album, "Dernier Appeal". Fakoly is someone who, although I do listen to his work, I probably do not pay it as much attention as I should because just about every time he has a new album and I hear it, I come away impressed in a major way and although I haven't made my way completely through it, "Dernier Appeal" appears to be another stellar set. What I have certainly made my way through completely, however, is the giant remake of Max Romeo's 'War Inna Babylon' which features Patrice on the first of two guesting roles. The legendary Alpha Blondy also makes a cameo a does Nneka on an album which you probably should take a listen to when you can.

"Coming Home To Me" EP by Messenjah Selah [Andrew Bassie Records]

I don't know when we'll get the next full album from Achis Reggae favourite, Messenjah Selah, but until then he's certainly doing his part to keep his fans happy. Along with pushing a relatively consistent stream of fine single ["I WILL BE! Your messenger!"], the Messenjah also recently teamed up with the increasingly esteemed Andrew 'Bassie' Campbell for one of the most impressive Reggae EP releases of 2014 so far, "Coming Home To Me". The seven tracked release checks in at nearly a half an hour of music and features some very impressive songs. At the head, literally and in terms of quality is the MASSIVE 'Sing of Your Powers', but I also love 'Dem Already Give In [Miracle]', the title track and 'Think Betta'. Selah is exceptionally talented and I love to see him active. Sure, I would have preferred a full release, but I'll take whatever I can get and "Coming Home To Me" is nearly exceptional.

Digital
'Same Way' by Busy Signal [Turf Music]
'Same Way', to my opinion was probably one of the best songs to come from the downright adventurous Busy Signal in 2013 and while it took its time, it has recently made its way to an official digital release and you should probably check it out if you haven't already. If you're looking for someone to push the proverbial limits, when it comes to Dancehall, Busy Signal has been the leader for the last few years and his most unique of talents shined all over 'Same Way'.

Digital
The Better Daze Riddim [Fras Twinz Music]

Following the Happy Daze Riddim from a few years back, Fras Twinz Music is apparently still stunned with their latest set, the lovely Better Daze Riddim. Though not a great deviation from its predecessor, which was just a bit more energized, the Better Daze stands well on its own with an almost Groovy Soca-ish type of vibes which sound sublime. And if you're doing Soca, why not involve Bunji Garlin and that is exactly what happens here as the Fras Twinz tap the Soca ace for one the Better Daze's best selections, 'Party Everyday'. Joining the Black Spaniard on the track are the likes of Elephant Man, Jahmiel, Patexxx (whose 'Better Daze a Come' is excellent) and label favourite Melloquence. Still, taking top honours here, in my opinion, is Bugle (new album, "Anointed", in stores now) whose effort, 'Live My Life', is exceptional. For what it is, the Better Daze is probably one of the better riddim albums of the year and one which is sure to appeal to a wide variety of fans.

Digital
'Marijuana Holiday' by Chrisinti [House Of Riddim]

Biggup the fine people at the House Of Riddim who have been terribly active lately, in dropping singles from a whole heap of different vocalists such as Delly Ranx (alongside Dynamq), Perfect Giddimani, Anthony B, Denham Smith, Uwe Banton and others with even more from the likes of Norris Man (sounds like a big tune, 'Jah Will Be There'), Louie Culture, Torch, Natural Black and more still to come in the next month or two. Of particular interest to us was definitely one of their latest deliveries, 'Marijuana Holiday' from underrated and overlooked veteran, Chrisinti. As I always say in the case of the abundantly gifted singer, it's just too bad that he doesn't record more, but perhaps 2014 is looking different as we dealt with another single of his not too long ago and this song is even better. Check it out today.

Digital
"Gate Way" EP by Ibo Fire [12 To 12 Muzik]
The burgeoning Ibo Fire struck mightily late last year with the sizable 'Hungry Daze’ and he now makes his way to his own solid EP, "Gate Way" for 12 To 12 Muzik (we constantly mention just how impressive of a year it has been for Reggae albums, but EP's have arguably been just as strong also). The signature piece here headlines a set which also includes five other selections, 'Holding On', 'Tears of Joy', 'Plant The Herbs' (which is fantastic), 'Feel The Vibes' (even better) and 'Guiltiness'. Ibo Fire is someone with a very big future ahead of him and, as you'll see on this EP, his present isn't doing bad either.

Digital
The Wul Dem Riddim [Yellow Moon Records]

Big names in the form of the always interesting Alkaline, I-Octane and Mavado keep things simple and team up to deal with the Wul Dem Riddim from Yellow Moon Records. Nothing here should really strike you as great (with the possible exception of the cover artwork) but, especially on Alkaline's tune, you'll find yourself on several occasions in these three songs wondering if you just heard what you thought you did.

Digital
The Maxfield Avenue Riddim [Big League Productions]

Finally this week is the official and expanded digital releasing of a track which probably dropped as far back as January or so, the HEAVY Maxfield Avenue, which comes courtesy of Big League Productions and Reggae In The City. As a composition, the Maxfield Avenue could lay claim to being one of the best tracks that I've heard this year and the labels involved were also very clever in who they chose to handle the vocals. Anthony B and Morgan Heritage headline a short but potent list which also includes Bay-C from TOK alongside Antoinette, Koxx, Kelissa, Maikal X and Achis Reggae favourite, Cali P, who chimes in with the outstanding and somewhat autobiographical 'Wha Gwan'.

Check It #63: The Messengers

"Deliverance" by Luciano [Ariwa Sounds]

First up this week is a link between a pair of Reggae pillars as Luciano teams up with the Mad Professor and Ariwa for a 'Dub Showcase', "Deliverance". The delightful project spans fifteen tracks and nearly an hour and includes dubs for each of the album's seven vocal offerings. Anytime you have an album from Luciano, it's definitely a big deal, but I do like how this release changes things up just a bit and, at least for me, it is a very welcome addition to the catalogue of The Messenger and hopefully it is the first of a some type of series as surely the vaults of the Mad Professor has more than one of these for more than one vocalist.

"Time Will Tell" by Cocoa Tea [HighLine Play]

From a pair of pillars to another, check "Time Will Tell" by veteran Cocoa Tea (I don't know why they spell his name like that, it makes it more difficult to find) (it's like when they name Turbulence - TurbulAnce). This set is unique because it is a LIVE album from the coolest man in the world. I definitely want to say that Cocoa Tea has had a live album previously but because I'm not completely sure (and am entirely too lazy to look it up), "Time Will Tell" may actually be his first. In any result, however, it is, at best, in thin company. Despite the rather odd tracklisting for this one, it does include some of the singer's most popular selections such as 'Israel's King', 'Bust Outta Hell', 'Lost My Sonia', 'Good Life' and even 'Tek Weh Yuh Gal'. Almost certainly a release destined to be overlooked, but a very nice one still and one which deserves your attention.

"Macka B: Live In Bilbao" [Ariwa Sounds]

Certainly not the first time in this case, but do check "Live In Bilbao" from loooooooooong time UK veteran, Macka B. About fifteen years ago Macka did "Roots Ragga", which was a Live album from the aforementioned Ariwa Sounds and it contained portions of a show done in Spain, and I am assuming that this is the full set of that particular performance. As always, you definitely know what to expect from Macka B and his downright unforgiving direction of intelligence and common sense and that is prevalent throughout this rather useful set… and on everything else he's ever done as well.

'Medical Marijuana Card' by Macka B [Chinelo Records]

And because, as I've said in the past, I LOVE when people draw artists, also check from Macka B, 'Medical Marijuana Card' which, I suppose, is a new single from his now two year old latest album release, "Change The World". The song was a highlight on that album, so its featured role comes to no surprise, but OBVIOUSLY Macka B is still damn happy that it came to fruition.

"Almost Hits" by Jamaram [Soulfire Artists]

While I still don't know very much about Jamaram, I do know that the German Reggae band is a fairly big deal and, as evidence of that, check out their latest release, "Almost Hits" which is a collection of some of the band's biggest tunes over the years. Most interesting here perhaps, however, may just be the accompanying DVD which is billed as:

"A documentary about Jamaram's tour through Germany accompanied by three fantastic Zimbabwean artists"

And I believe a few years back they had a lot of background footage from a tour they were doing and this may be an assembly of that footage. OF COURSE, my own greatest interest in Jamaram has greatly to do with [I THINK] one of its members being the brother of the sitting Minister of Defense, Sara Lugo. Still, if you release a project like this, surely you have more going for you than your relations, so do check out the latest album from Jamaram, "Almost Hits".

'Turn It Up Loud' by Patrice Roberts [Fox Fuse]

Soca star, Patrice Roberts, continued to quietly show just how wonderfully consistent she is in 2014 by having one of the best seasons out of anyone in my opinion (not that it was hard to do this year) (because it wasn't). One of her highlights came in the form of the frenetically colourful 'Turn It Up Loud' for Stadic Studio. That tune now comes to official release courtesy of the inescapable Fox Fuse. You have to begin to hope that there is some type of album in the works for Roberts (which would be her third and her first from 2008, I believe) because despite bigger names in Soca having big projects coming soon, given her nice output in recent years, Patrice Roberts should be able to turn in a big winner if given the opportunity.

The Carnival Riddim [Fox Fuse]

Fox Fuse also has a distribution hand in bringing forth (everything) the excellent Carnival Riddim from Nu Generation Studios. This very clever track carries five tunes from a nice variety of names who show it in a fine light. Kes tops a roster which also includes Blaxx, still palancing after all of these years JW & Blaze, Bajan up and comer Nikita Browne and Olatunji Yearwood whose BRILLIANT 'What We Know' is the best song on the riddim in my opinion.

'Nation to Lead' by Ras Brando [New Millionaire Entertainment]

Recently, a name I've had my eye on for years now, the fiery Ras Brando, announced that he had officially teamed up with New Millionaire Entertainment to take his career forward. I'm really hoping that this leads not only to more success for the chanter, but more ACTIVITY as well. To get things started, label and artist push up with a big new single, 'Nation To Lead'. Brando has always had sizable talents ["CONQUERING LION NEVA FAIL MAN!"] and that is on full display on his new tune and, again, I'm really hoping that this is the beginning of something big because Brando's is a name which has been 'on the rise' for too long now and it's well time for hit to hit his peak. Tune features backing vocals from Achis Reggae favourite, Chantelle Ernandez.

The Butter Knife Riddim [Warriors Musick Productions]

Though I'm not totally thrilled with the very odd Butter Knife Riddim (it's decent, but DIFFERENT) from Warriors Musick Productions, I do have to give it credit for backing 'Hydro', which is probably the single best tune I've heard from Fantan Mojah in a few years now. It is sublime! Joining Mojah are Dancehall star, Busy Signal, and Hollow Point alongside Devano and both of those tunes are decent, but Fantan Mojah hits great heights here.

'Until You Come' by Denyque [Markus Records]

Finally this week check a BIG tune from Denyque which I had been enjoying for a minute and it now reaches a full release. 'Until You Come' may be the leader for the best love song I've heard in 2014 (unless I'm really overlooking someone) (and I may be). It is a golden song! Unsurprisingly handling the production duties is reigning Achis Reggae Producer of The Year, Markus Myrie, whose Sex Mate Riddim (which is also now available and features I-Octane, Mavado and Tifa) underpins the tune. NOT TO BE MISSED.
