Coming Soon #69: Clothing - Optional

"Sex, Love & Reggae" by Gyptian [VP Records]

Reggae star, Gyptian, is taking his clothes off and VP Records is shamelessly helping him do it (as is a woman with four hands) for his forthcoming fourth release for the label (and fifth overall, by my count), "Sex, Love & Reggae". The album follows his most recent and most popular set to date, 2010's "Hold You", which was named after what has gone onto become the biggest hit of the popular singer’s career to date and has already generated a considerable amount of attention. The album also finds the label's continued push to promote Gyptian in a… certain way which would appeal, strikingly, to a certain type of fan and, perhaps, continue his more 'mainstream' course. To help along the way, this time VP and Gyptian have enlisted the help of the likes of Melanie Fiona, Estelle, Kes The Band, Angela Hunte and even man of the moment and recent label signee, Bunji Garlin, all of whom make appearances within the album's seventeen tracks. Early spins as colourful of a mix as the title would suggest, which is unsurprising considering the previous album and, again, the not too hidden target-audience of an album like this. Still, quite a few tunes do sound rather promising, including the full opener 'Reggae Morning' and I'm very interested in hearing the finished product.

"K-Raktère" by Mighty Ki La [MKL Productions]

Fireball from out of Madinina, Mighty Ki La, FINALLY delivers his third album (and his first in like five years), the loooooooooong awaited "K-Raktère". In doing so, the DJ joins the likes of Saïk, Kalash and Daly as big name Dancehall acts from out of the FWI who have delivered albums in 2013. Much like was the case with Saïk's "Second Souffle" and Daly's album, "Dalycious", "K-Raktère" was in the 'coming soon' stages for quite awhile and though it had spawned early hits such as 'Regine' (which probably dropped in the first half of 2011, two and a half years ago if your math is awful), I had even kind of forgotten about it all eventuating into an album, but I'm still damn happy that it all has come together now. Though I'm still waiting on the final tracklist, just looking from my memory, the new album, at least, contains combinations with Ward 21 and Deva Bratt (and MKL had previously worked with Bramma as well). At his best, Mighty Ki La is a devastating talent wrapped into one of the most intense packages in all of Dancehall and a THRILL to listen to so definitely check out "K-Raktère" when it reaches.

The Skin Out Riddim [Silent Mode Entertainment]

Don't get dressed yet! Dre Silence and co. at Silent Mode Entertainment are in with their full Skin Out Riddim. The colourful track is probably best known for having backed 'Tick Like A Clock' from Anthony B (who also, apparently, has a new EP, which we'll tell you about next time). That tune does appear on the full release and Anthony B isn't alone and is joined with at least decent tracks from Ward 21, the inescapable Deva Bratt, world's angriest man, Stein, and others.

"Street Shots Vol. 7: Back To School" [21st Hapilos]

Already??? It doesn't seem like it at all, but 21st Hapilos' "Street Shots" series has ran its way up to #7 and now they're taking us "Back To School". Typically the releases focus more on Dancehall, so when you see names such as Mavado, Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer, Aidonia, Jah Vinci and others, you definitely are not surprised, but I was well pleased to see Kabaka Pyramid and his WICKED tune, 'Choppinz', on board as well.

"Eek-ology" by Eek A Mouse [VP Records]

Legendary Dancehall singer, Eek-A-Mouse, is the latest in a wonderfully ever increasing line of names to have some of the biggest music of their respective careers tied up by the aforementioned VP Records and produced into a very useful edition of their "Reggae Anthology" series. As usual, the album features many songs over multiple discs (in this case, thirty-four over two) as well as an accompanying DVD which is sure to include literal GOLD for collectors. Big tunes such as 'Ganja Smuggling', 'Anarexol', of course 'Wa Do Dem' and many others appear.

'Just Bad' by Mad CobraRatigan [Brixton Music Group]

The brutality continues as veteran Dancehall DJ, Mad Cobra, continues to cut and carve his way through what is turning out to be a winning 2013 from the snake. His latest piece of work finds him teaming up with  impressive label mate, Ratigan, and re-teaming with their own Brixton Music Group. If you have been through pieces such as 'Di Baddest' and 'Defend It', expect more of the same from the ultra-violent 'Just Bad' and we're definitely hoping that all of this good music in 2013 leads to a new CRAZY album from the Cobra in 2014.

'Support Fi Support' by Bounty Killer [Payday Music]

Having previously given the same treatment to Iyara's 'Haters A Pree' which is carried by the same riddim, the flashily intoxicating Drink Out, the fine people at Payday Music are rounding things out by delivering Bounty Killer's effort, 'Support Fi Support'. It is kind of different topic from the Killer but is one which obviously suits him because this is probably one of his better selections, in my opinion, over the past couple of years or so.

Tian Winter [Precision Productions]

Biggup Precision Productions, as always, but especially so here as one of the label's favourite stars, multiple time Antiguan Soca Monarch Tian Winter, is back with a brand new album for the 2013 season, "Roaming”. On their digital arm, Precision Digital, PP carries the new album which is steered by a title track which netted the singer his two-hundredth consecutive Groovy Monarch crown (he, literally, wins it every year). There were also some songs on the new album which I didn’t really pay much attention to ('Roaming' was fantastic from the first time I heard it, however) such as 'Good Time' and the blazing 'Adrenaline'. Also included is the MAD 'Ain't Got Time For That' and 'Superstar' alongside Antigua Soca Queen, Claudette 'CP' Peters.

And that's not all! Along with dealing with the new album, Precision Productions is also taking care of Winters' first two pieces, "Not Afraid" and "Cya Fail Me". Tian Winters, for what he does, has been making bonafide hits for a few years now and he already had two albums to his credit which feature some of his biggest material to date (including an older song that my Wife used to LOVE, but wasn't aware was sung by Tian Winter, the GORGEOUS 'All I Ask'). So, maybe you aren't a fan - now is a great time to become one - check out one of Soca music's brightest talents, Tian Winter, today.

'Greatest Pussy' by Masicka [Adde Productions]

And because balance is wonderful, x-rated veteran, Masicka, along with Adde Productions stays on course as well with his latest drop where he hopes to educate all about the 'Greatest Pussy'. Because of its nearly solemn tones, the song is almost unintentionally [I THINK] hilarious, but you have to give credit - there is skill here and there always is when Masicka is in a good form.
